Mary E. Gratton

Our much loved daughter, sister, aunt, Mary E Gratton passed away suddenly on Thursday, January 9th. Mary was born on November 27, 1957 at Parks Victory Hospital in Napa. Mary went to Irene M Snow School, Ridgeview Junior High and graduated from Napa High in 1976. Mary determined early on that nursing was going to be her passion and her calling. She went to San Jose State University, then moved to Samuel Merritt to get her RN. At the age of 45, after working for 18 years at Merritt in Cardiac Care, she sold everything and joined the Peace Corps. She then lived in The Gambia for 3 years doing post natal care in several villages. When Mary returned to the United States, she furthered her education and received her Masters degree and became a Nurse Practitioner. She then began working for Cardiovascular Consultants in Walnut Creek and Oakland. Mary led a remarkable life. She loved her beloved Colorado River, having been down the river 9 times. She also river rafted in South and Central America, and several rivers in the US. Mary also performed one week of service with the Sierra Club every year; believing always in giving back in what she so enjoyed. Mary traveled extensively; golfing in Scotland, walking the Moors in England, skiing in Austria, and visiting so many historical sites in the Mediterranean. Mary was the happiest when she had her latest adventure booked; which usually was 2 to 3 times a year! Mary had a very broad and generous view of the world. She believed that people mattered more than acquisitions and experiences were more valuable than being overly cautious. Mary is survived by her parents, Paul and Patricia Gratton, her twin sister Virginia (Jack), niece Elizabeth Poston( Dan) and great niece Margaret, and nephews Benjamin Betourne and John Gratton. She is predeceased by her brother, David Gratton; they are together now. Mary's last generous gift was the donation of her organs. Her strong and beautiful heart is still beating. A memorial rosary will be held on Friday, January 17, 2014 at 7:00pm at Claffey & Rota Funeral Home. A memorial mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 1:00pm.
