Susan Marie (Mandeville) Schetter

November 9, 1935 - September 11, 2017

Susan Marie (Mandeville) Schetter, 81, of Napa, CA passed peacefully into eternal life on Monday, September 11, 2017. Born November 9, 1935 in Jacksonville, IL, she was the eldest of 4 children of the late Edward J. Mandeville, and Margot (Mueller) Mandeville. Susan, (also known as Susie by all those who loved her), was a beloved kindergarten and 1st grade teacher for over 30 years. After graduating from Alverno College in Milwaukee, WI, she taught elementary school until 1960 when she married her loving husband Carl F. Schetter who set-up a successful law practice in Milwaukee and was a Village Trustee in Shorewood where they lived. Together they had 4 children who all feel blessed to have been raised with so much love and affection. She returned to teaching in 1984 after receiving her Masters as a reading specialist from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee. In 1989 they pulled up roots and made a new home in the beautiful Napa Valley, California where she continued her teaching career until retiring in 2002. Together with her husband, Susie had an amazing and fulfilling life, they loved entertaining in their home and socializing through the many clubs, and organizations they belonged to, and also enjoyed many family vacations including camping and skiing trips across the country, traveling to Europe to visit relatives, visiting vacation homes in Elkhart Lake, WI, and Siesta Key, FL and in later years spending time enjoying friends and family amongst the picturesque vineyards in the Napa Valley. Blessed with a large extended (Irish, German) family on both sides, spending time with relatives was a priority and Susan was the glue that kept everyone in touch. Susan was proud to be Irish and a Catholic and lived a life of devotion. The light that shined through her touched everyone who met her. In later years she served as a Sunday school teacher and volunteered her time to the church to serve those in need and developed close relationships with her pastors and church staff at St. Apollinaris in Napa, CA. She admired her parents, was proud of her husband, her children, grandchildren and extended group of nieces, nephews and cousins who she kept in touch with over the years, and were in turn grateful for her unconditional love and attention. Her selfless devotion to her family and her faith were admired and commented on by all who knew her. A treasure has been lost in a generation of time that will not come our way again. Susie is survived by her husband Carl F. Schetter who kept her laughing for 57 years, and her spirit and life lessons live on in her children Fred Schetter of Sacramento, Mary Butler (Paul) of San Anselmo, CA, John (Patty) Schetter of Orangevale, CA, Tom (Lisa) Schetter of Roseville, CA; three younger brothers Edward (Judy) Mandeville of Chicago, IL, Brian J. (Jean) Mandeville of Charlottsville, VA, and Howard (Pat) of Newburyport, MA; seven grandchildren, Nicole and Daniel Schetter, Madeleine and Charlie Butler, Owen and Andrew Schetter, and Elliott Schetter; 6 nieces, 4 nephews and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews, and cousins in the U.S. and Ireland. Memorial services will be held at St. Apollinaris Church, Napa, 3700 Lassen Street, CA on Friday, September 29, 2017 at 12 Noon with a reception in the church hall to follow. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Susan’s name to The Marians of the Immaculate Conception www.marian.org, Cancer Research Institute https://www.cancerresearch.org, or St. Apollinaris Catholic Church.
