January 3, 1933 - January 12, 2014
Our beautiful Mom went to join our Lord surrounded with love on January 12, 2014. Mom fought a courageous battle against pancreatic cancer with dignity and grace. We are blessed to have shared that journey with her. Our Mom was born on January 3, 1933 at Stanley Ranch in Napa to Aureliano (Tony) and Guadalupe (Lupe) Casares. Mom attended Los Amigos Elementary. Mom’s family moved to St. Helena in 1940 as her father was employed by Beringer Brothers Winery. Mom attended St. Helena Elementary, Junior High and High School graduating with the Class of 1950. Shortly after high school Mom was employed at Bank of America. In 1951 Mom married her high school sweetheart (and long time family friend), Richard Barragan. A few months later as a new bride, Mom left St. Helena to join her husband, who was in the Air Force, at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska. Their first two children, Randy & Catherine, were born in Alaska. After our Dad’s discharge in 1954, they returned to Napa and established their permanent home on Lilienthal Ave. A couple years later their third child, Brenda, was born. Growing up on Lilienthal Ave. is where we had some of the most memorable times not just for our family but for many of our friends that called Lilienthal Ave. home and became part of our extended family. Those memories are still cherished and shared to this day. With their first three children almost grown Mom & Dad decided an empty nest was not for them. Christina Marie was born on July 4, 1972. Our very own firecracker! As Christina grew there were trips to Disneyland, Mexico, and Hawaii. And there were always motor-home trips to Tahoe and Wrights Beach where anyone that wanted to go was welcomed with open arms and treated like family. Mom & Dad sacrificed to put all of their children through Siena and Justin High School. With Mom not only raising four children but working full time at various businesses in Napa. Their main goal was to make sure that their children’s needs were met. Sadly our Dad went to be with our Lord in 1989. Mom kept Lilienthal Ave as our refuge and many more good memories were made. We will forever miss him. Seven years later our Mom met the second love of her life. Robert (Bob) Barthel. They enjoyed traveling together in their RV and seeing the sights from the West to East Coast. They also took a trip to Israel. They spent much of their time in Lincoln, CA where Christina and her family moved. Mom especially enjoyed spending time with her great grandchildren. Many beautiful memories and long lasting friendships were made there. Our Mom had a huge heart and everyone she touched was enveloped in her love. We appreciate all those who have visited and sent cards sharing their special memories of a very special lady, Our Mom. Our Mom was employed as a secretary / bookkeeper for 50 plus years and was a member of many organizations. One of her favorites being St. Johns No. 26 YLI. One of her much loved events was the enchilada take-out dinner where she was the original enchilada queen. Our Mom was predeceased by our Dad, Richard Barragan, her parents, brothers, Johnny &Conrad (Poncho) Casares, & sister Helen Mealey. She is survived by her husband Bob Barthel, her children: Randy (Sean) Barragan, Hawaii, Catherine (John) Schimmer, Napa, Brenda Miller, Napa, Christina (Jamie) McCarty, Lincoln, Robin Raymond, Richmond. Grandchildren: Eric (Stacy), Mari, Julie, & Heather Schimmer, Jacquelyn & Madison McCarty, & Amber Gwen. Great Grandchildren: Elijah Schimmer, James & Matthew Collins. Sister-in-law Tonia Salazar . Nieces and Nephews: Ron (Ruth) Mealey, Barbara (Larry) O’Brian, Debbie Mealey, Cindy Mealey, Anthony Mealey, Mick (Chely) Salazar, Holly (Mike) Clark, Gina (Joe) Rasler, Renee (Jayme) Barragan, Teresa (John) Mack, Roy (Rachel) Barragan, Steve (Evelee) Barragan and Debbie (John) Moussa. And many other family members that we hold dear to our hearts. Our Family would like to thank everyone who took special care of our Mom and shared this journey with us. Diane (Sis) Slaight we could not have done this without you. You are forever our family. Thank you to the Hospice Nurses and Caregivers, Carol, Carolyn, Seana, Lynne, Susan, Jessica, Patricia, Aunt Toni, Sylvia, Maria, and Angela. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. And to Christina – Mom was so proud of the way you stepped up and took on the job of her primary caregiver. You willingly gave up your job and your family life to ensure that our Mom’s last journey here was peaceful and loving. Mom was so thankful that you were there, and so amazed that you were able to do this. You are truly amazing. Thank you and your family for the sacrifices you made for our Mom. With all our love we thank you. Viewing at Claffey & Rota Friday, January 17th, 12 – 4 pm. Rosary Friday night 7pm at St. Thomas Aquinas Church.
