Edgar Eugene Harper

Edgar Eugene Harper (Ed) passed away at his home in Napa on June 22, 2017 at the age of 100. Ed was born in Irving, Illinois to Lloyd Edgar Harper and Maud May (Osborne) Harper on March 21, 1917. He was raised and attended school in St. Elmo, Illinois. In 1936 he enlisted in the US Army and his service to his country included deployment in the Philippines and Europe when he received an Honorable Discharge in 1946. Ed had a varied career working in the oil fields, lumber industry and as a truck driver before he settled at C&H Sugar Refinery in Crockett in 1948 where he worked for 32 ½ years. In 1963 Ed married Donnes (Martin) Shimel. For many years Ed was active in Bethel Assembly of God Church. Ed loved music and played the harmonica. He enjoyed fishing and gardening. Ed and Donnes spent time traveling after his retirement in 1981. Ed is survived by Donnes, his wife of 54 years; children Terry Harper (Nancy) of Napa; Judy Ross (John) of Spring Valley; Ruth Young (Jim) of Napa; Alyce Robertson (Dave) of Napa; Steven Shimel (Sherry) of Martinez and Patsy Potter (Brent) of Napa; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and niece Beverly Solowiejko of Florida. Ed was predeceased by his parents, twin sister Alice Harper, daughter Mary Harper, brother Joe Harper, and his first wife Thelma (Dunn) Elliott. Interment will be at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery.
