It is with sadness that we announce the death of Dorothy Pappas Menzel at age 90. A first generation American, she was born to Greek immigrants Peter and Mary Pappas and was the seventh of nine children. She grew up in the Bay View District in San Francisco and was proud of her Greek heritage. Throughout high school Dorothy took part in debate contests and won local and state competitions. It was through the debating team that Father Feeney at University of San Francisco encouraged her to attend night school at USF (men-only during the day) and San Francisco State College. She met her sweetheart Warren B. Menzel at Commerce High School, and they married in 1945. Dorothy finished her Masters Degree in Speech Correction at Stanford University in 1948 when she was about to deliver her firstborn, Daniel. She was a Speech Therapist in Redwood City and taught in the Santa Ynez Valley (Santa Barbara) before the Menzel Family moved to Napa in 1963. In 1965 Dorothy began teaching Speech at Napa Valley Community College and later was Division Chairperson of Language and Developmental Studies until her retirement in 1989. Dorothy and Warren traveled extensively in their retirement. Dorothy instilled a love of lifelong learning, hard work, and ethics. Her strong Catholic faith was the cornerstone of her life. Dorothy influenced four generations of family, friends, colleagues, and students with her sharp mind, giving nature, and loving presence. ! Predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Warren B.
