Mervin Joseph Bettencourt

Mervin Joseph Bettencourt, 92, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and loved ones on January 2nd, 2026, at his home in Napa, CA. Born in Saint Helena, CA on May 11, 1933, to Nelson and Josephine Bettencourt, Mervin was raised in Napa and was a proud graduate of Napa High School (class of 1951), where he played football, tennis, and basketball. Mervin was active in school leadership, attending Boys State in 1951. After graduating from Napa High in 1951, Mervin moved on to Napa College, where he served as Student Body President. Mervin later enlisted in the United States Army, and was extremely proud to serve his country. While stationed in Normandy, Mervin became fluent in French and learned to ski. After completing his service in the army, Mervin returned to Napa to work for his family business at Bettencourt Bicycle Shop, a business that served the Napa Valley for nearly 75 years. Mervin later returned to school and earned a degree in education from California State University, Sacramento. After receiving his teaching certificate, he went on to work in education in the greater Sacramento area, teaching business at Kennedy High School for many years. During his time in the Sacramento area, Mervin developed an interest in real estate investing that led to a career he enjoyed for the remainder of his life. Mervin married the love of his life, Carol, in 2003. Mervin and Carol settled in Napa. Mervin enjoyed many hours in his garden, where he grew a variety of vegetables by seed. Mervin is survived by his wife, Carol, who he loved dearly. Mervin is also survived by countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and stepchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Bernice Bettencourt and Nelson Bettencourt Jr., and parents Nelson and Josephine. A celebration of life will be held on January 17th, 2026 at 11:00 am, at St. Apollinaris Church, followed by a reception at Tulocay Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, Camp Kesem, a camp for children whose parents are dealing with cancer, and to the Western Dominican Province in Oakland.
